Brilliance Hardness Durability Fire

What we commonly call brilliance is determined by refractive index. Brillance is a measure of how much white light is returned to the eye.

 

 

Hardness refers to a gemstone material's resistance to being scratched. It is rated on the Mohs scale. A diamond has a rating of 10. Moissanite rates a 9.25, making it the second hardest mineral known to man. Sapphire and Ruby have a rating of 9.

As light travels through a gem, it separates into the colors of the rainbow. This splitting effect is known as fire. Moissanite has 2 times the fire of a diamond. Even under candle light, it displays an absolutely brilliant range of color.

 

The fire of moissanite produces a color spectrum similar to a rainbow. Although nearly colorless, moissanite contains color saturations of green, gray, teal and yellow.


Moissanite is the shining star in terms of fire, luster, durability and brilliance, as shown in the chart below.
